About GAN (Who are we?)

Global Action Nepal (GAN) was founded in 1996 with the primary aim of improving the education of children in Nepal. Much of GAN’s work focuses on children, seeing them as both the present and the future of the country and the means by which any real change must come about
and therefore endeavors to advance the role of children in the community. Over the years, GAN has diversified its activities and now works within a number of different areas including: community empowerment; environmental; health, and sanitation issues. Despite this diversification, at the very heart of its activities there is a continued focus on education; "Putting the Child First"
GAN believes that the people of Nepal have the right to basic services, and that they deserve to be in control of their own destiny. GAN’s projects and work are always closely aligned with grass roots level needs, focusing on community-led, participatory development. GAN does not seek to change the culture or people of Nepal but to provide them with the tools to enable them to help themselves.
In an effort to improve the education of some of the more unfortunate children of Nepal and improve the development of the community at grass roots level, GAN sponsors children of primary and secondary school age as well as strengthening community organisational capabilities.
GAN has begun to help develop the managerial and organisational capacities of local institutions, communities, and individuals in order to increase the number of self-sustainable improvements in construction, health, environmental and education projects throughout economically disadvantaged areas of its project sites.
From the early stages of its development, GAN has been mobilising national and international volunteers in various programs, providing relevant training and work experience in marginalised communities, which further contributes to the overall sustainable development efforts in Nepal.
GAN continues to grow, and has developed a comprehensive program of providing basic health services, raising awareness on environmental and sanitation issues.
